Pieter Vanden Broeck

I am a researcher at the Università degli studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, courtesy of Italy’s MSCA-Young programme. I remain affiliated with the Centre on Organizational Innovation at Columbia University, where I previously held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship alongside an affiliation with Teachers College. I am also a scientific collaborator at UCLouvain, where I was previously a lecturer and a postdoctoral researcher.

My previous research focused on Europeanization as a process that makes room for forms of education that break with the national “grammar of schooling”. Extending this line of thought to globally operating learning platforms, I now study how algorithms reconfigure professional work and organizational life. My past and ongoing fieldwork combines ethnography in the EdTech industry with classroom observation across the US, Europe, and Japan. Across both lines of inquiry, I ask how what counts as worth is established and contested.

Some of my publications have appeared in Organization Theory, Journal of Education Policy, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and The American Sociologist. Together with Eric Mangez, I have edited a special issue on Niklas Luhmann’s sociology of education, published by the European Educational Research Journal.
